In conjunction with the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Missouri Archaeological Society, Dr. Douglas D. Scott, RPA, Visiting Research Scientist, Colorado Mesa University, Grand Junction, Colorado, will present The Civil War in the Trans-Mississippi West: Archaeology of the Battles of Wilson’s Creek, Pea Ridge and Other Stories.
The American Civil War was truly brother against brother, especially in the state of Missouri. There, pro-southern Missouri Militia fought Union regulars and volunteers. The 1861 Battle of Wilson’s Creek was a southern victory. The spring 1862 Battle of Pea Ridge was a decisive Union victory and resulted in Missouri staying in the Union camp. Subsequently, 1,500 other battles and skirmishes followed in Missouri before the war ended. Recent archaeological and historical studies of these battles have added considerable detail to understanding those events by demonstrating through physical evidence there is more than is recorded in the recollections of participants or the official record of events.
Event is free and open to the public. RSVP required.
