When Workng Works: Examining the Relationship between Employment and Delinquency in Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood

The transition into the labor market typically occurs in adolescence as teenagers obtain their first jobs. Despite this seemingly normative occurrence, a large body of research has found that adolescents who work tend to engage in more deviant behavior, and do less well in school compared to their non-working peers. Utilizing the life-course perspective, the present research examines the developmental course of employment during adolescence and emerging adult and its relationship to crime and educational attainment in two samples.
