Set in Sweden around 1900, this comedy of manners centers on the tangled love affairs of several couples who have gathered for a weekend at a lavish country estate. The high-latitude landscape is washed in the glow of a perpetual summer sunset, and elegant waltz music fills the air. Yet the atmosphere is also charged with jealousy, suspicion, regret and desire among the mismatched couples. Amidst swirling emotions and unexpected revelations, new partners and new beginnings emerge. The story is advanced through witty dialogue and a sophisticated score composed entirely in 3/4 time. Songs range from the cleverly complex trio "Now"/"Later"/"Soon" to the haunting ballad "Send in the Clowns."
