Missouri State University’s Global Education Lab (GEL) is a collaborative place for teaching and learning about the world and its people. The GEL houses several of the College of Education’s global initiatives and materials used by teacher candidates.
The Global Teacher Education Exchange brings new and future K-12 educators from Missouri State and the MENA region into a vibrant professional learning community where they engage in cross-cultural collaboration and prepare to teach for global understanding. Participants learn with and from each other through weekly online, face-to-face workshops where they engage with international experts in teacher training. Since its founding in 2020, more than 900 educators from MSU, Morocco, Libya and beyond have participated.
Removing Barriers is a collaborative program with MSU’s English Language Institute. Through it, future educators learn how to teach English lessons to adult multilingual learners. Teacher candidates take that learning into the community where they host sessions that teach English lessons to adults and provide literacy enrichment for their children. Through this program, teacher candidates apply theory to practice to better understand the connections between homes, schools and communities.
Global Teacher Talks give faculty from MSU and their international colleagues opportunities to collaborate in the production of webinars and workshops about teaching and learning with international scholars, leaders and education innovators. Past topics have included action research, the challenges and promises of distance learning, social-emotional learning, civic education and integrating virtual exchange into teacher preparation.
The World Teacher Makerspace offers supplies for teacher candidates who are creating lessons about the world and its people, including materials from public diplomacy programs and international organizations.
The projects housed in the GEL are supported by many sources including grants and donations.
