As advisors, we often meet with students who continuously engage in behaviors that are incongruent with their goals for academic success. Advisors may offer advice, only for the student to later return to our office engaging in the same problematic behaviors previously discussed (i.e., missing classes, employing poor study habits, poor time management). “MI seeks to enhance students’ motivations and guide them toward changing specific problem behaviors (W. R. Miller & Rollnick, 2002, 2009).” This forum will introduce Motivational Interviewing as a communication tool advisors can use to assist students in changing problematic behaviors.
