Description

Monika Weiss is a Polish-American artist who creates intermedia works in film and sound, as well as performance, drawing and public projects. Evoking ancient rituals of lamentation, her art relates to trauma, history, mythology and collective memory. Trained as both a pianist and a visual artist, Weiss composes the sound that constitutes many of her works, considering the vocal-musical-poetic form of lament as a modality of collective resistance and remembrance. Her exhibitions include Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago, Chile; CSW Zamek Ujazdowski in Warsaw, Poland; Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum, Miami, and Lehman College Art Gallery, City University of New York.

Her public projects include Drawing Lethe at World Financial Center Winder Garden, New York, created in response to Sept. 11 site and “Shrouds,” created on the site of the former German concentration camp in Gruenberg. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, ARTnews, Art in America, Prague Post and numerous others.
