7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, November 02, 2022
Description

"It Comes Alive" is the tagline for the 1932 Universal Pictures' Classic Monster movie, The Mummy, staring Boris Karloff. This pre-code film is significant for its position in film history, the horror genre, and in the history of Egyptomania that spread across the U.S. after the discovery of King Tut's ancient Egyptian tomb, exactly 100 years ago.

Watch the short 75-minute film and stay for a panel discussion with four Missouri State University experts: Egyptologist Dr. Julia Troche (History), Ancient Historian and Professor of Global Studies Dr. Bryan Brinkman (World Languages and Cultures); Archaeologist and Classicist Dr. Kristin Harper (World Languages and Cultures); and Media Theory and Criticism Professor Dr. Holly Holladay (Media, Journalism, and Film).

This event is sponsored by CHPA, the Department of History and the Department of Media, Journalism and Film, in collaboration with the Moxie Cinema.

Synopsis: A team of British archaeologists led by Sir Joseph Whemple (Arthur Byron) discover the mummified remains of the ancient Egyptian prince Imhotep (Boris Karloff), along with the legendary scroll of Thoth. When one of the archaeologists recites the scroll aloud, Imhotep returns to life, but escapes. Several years later, Imhotep has taken on the guise of a wealthy man, as he searches Egypt for his lost love, who he believes has been reincarnated as the lovely Helen Grosvenor (Zita Johann). [RT]
