Chemistry & Biochemistry Seminar: "The Industrious Path: A Perspective on Careers Outside of Academia"
Date and time
3:35 PM - 4:25 PM, October 26, 2022
Description

The Chemistry and Biochemistry department will host Zach Wilson, chemist with the City of Springfield.

As undergraduate and graduate students, many paths lay ahead of you. Of these paths, there are three prominent directions possible for your future careers.

  • Academia, where you will hone your craft until you are a leading expert in your field of research while educating others.
  • Industry, where you will use your acquired skills in direct real-world applications that will have you working with a team of professionals to ensure quality production of goods and services.
  • Government, as a scientific authority to enforce the safety of your community using the tools provided by your education.

Wilson has walked all three of these pathways and his career now involves working with the Springfield, Missouri, government in the field of environmental science. He's currently the nutrient chemist at the Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant (SWTP). He'll talk about what he does for our community and how he got to this position in the first place.

Deciding where to take your career is a personal decision, but hopefully an easier one after this presentation.
