GGP Seminar: Dr. Brittany Krzyzanowski - "Geography in Public Health and Medical Research"

Dr. Brittany Krzyzanowski explores the impact of environmental exposures on neuromotor and neurodegenerative disease as a postdoctoral researcher at Barrow Neurological Institute. Barrow is the world's leading neurological disease treatment and research center. Interest in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for population health and medical research is growing as new and innovative spatial analytical tools offer valuable insight into how human health and disease vary across space. This seminar will touch broadly on a wide range of health and medical GIS topics including geovisualizaiton in neighborhood health research, zone design in group-randomized community trials, HIPAA privacy law in mapping electronic medical records (EMR), and R-INLA in environmental neuroepidemiology.

At Barrow Neurological Institute, Krzyzanowski builds on her previous work at Washington University Medical School where she studied Parkinson's disease, ALS and Alzheimer's disease. Prior to this, her training focused on human/environmental interaction, geospatial research methods and population health at the University of Minnesota's Department of Geography, Environment and Society where she completed her PhD in 2021. As an interdisciplinary scholar, she uses her eclectic skills to engage with a broad range of population health topics ranging from infectious disease to cardiovascular health to depression, and in her current position, neurodegenerative disorders. Her unique background in human health and environmental science inspires her to improve societal well-being by elucidating disease-environment relationships and advancing public health research methods while promoting the transparency of complex geospatial techniques.
