Treading Ice: Gravity Data Collection in the Northwest Passage

In August 2021, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency scientists boarded the USCGC Healy, a medium-sized ice breaker, bound for a scientific voyage through the Northwest Passage. The scientific mission of this voyage will be discussed, including new information about the structure of the Arctic Ocean seafloor crust obtained using gravity sensors and how this data is being used to refine the models of the Earth that serve as the basis of the WGS84 coordinate system that is used by GPS in numerous services such as cellphones, cars, and planes.
Our speaker will be MSU alumna Alicia A. Metzger, M.S. (2019) Geospatial Science/Geology, B.S. (2012) Geology/Astronomy. Metzger is a geodetic earth scientist in the Office of Geomatics at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in St. Louis, Missouri.
