About the book

Released by McFarland & Company in February 2022, “Ozark Voices: Oral Histories from the Heartland” encourages everyone (not just historians) to conduct oral history with the people in their lives.

The book is comprised of three sections: 1) samples of oral history from region; 2) instructional essays on methodology; and 3) Primm’s personal stories on working in this realm.

More on the author

Alex Sandy Primm has worked for more than 40 years as an oral historian, storyteller and educator in the Ozarks. He also served as a correspondent in Vietnam and taught oral history in mainland China.

In addition to his book, “Ozark Voices: Oral Histories from the Heartland,” Primm has also worked as an associate writer and producer on the award-winning short video, “Treehouse: An Ozark Story.”

Mission of the Ozarks Studies Institute

The Ozarks Studies Institute, an initiative of the Missouri State University Libraries, seeks to preserve the history and culture of the Ozarks by fostering a comprehensive knowledge of Ozarks people and their heritage. The institute serves as an educational resource by collecting and discovering new knowledge about the Ozarks and providing access to that knowledge.
