Advisors as Social Justice Advocates: A Primer
Presenter: Dr. Kyler Sherman-Wilkins, assistant professor, Department of Sociology & Anthropology
For many of our students, and for students from historically excluded groups, it has become increasingly difficult for them to "just be a student." Whether struggling to nourish their bodies with food, balancing work and school, withstanding racial microaggressions, or worrying about basic rights being stripped away, students at Missouri State have a lot on their plate as they attempt to navigate the curriculum. To advise today's students, we must reimagine academic advising as more than merely helping students select courses and identify particular career paths. Indeed, advisors today must be advocates who are willing and able to identify and eradicate oppressive, structural barriers that keep far too many our students from succeeding. In this forum, Dr. Kyler Sherman-Wilkins will provide an overview on how to adopt an advocacy approach, rooted in social justice, to better serve our students both while at the university, and beyond.
