GGP Seminar: Dr. William T. Jackson, "Rolling on the River: Detrital-zircon geochronology of Late Pleistocene deposits in the Mississippi River Valley"

Dr. William Jackson will visit our campus from The University of Memphis, where he is an assistant professor in the Department of Earth Sciences.

His seminar talk will be an exploration of feedback between climate and sedimentology, including an examination of detrital-zircon U-Pb geochronology of Late Pleistocene core samples from the eastern lowlands in the Mississippi River Valley near Memphis, Tennessee. The data allows an understanding of sediment provenance, the extent of the paleo-Mississippi River drainage, and the determination of temporal confluence of the paleo-Missouri and paleo-Ohio rivers. The method of compare and contrast of results are used of detrital-zircon geochronology to results from Late Pleistocene deep-marine fan deposits in the Gulf of Mexico; providing a complete source-to-sink evaluation of the Mississippi drainage system over the past 15,000 years.

Jackson's areas of research include the Eastern Tibetan Plateau, the Laramide belt of the Northern Rocky Mountains (Wyoming and Montana), the Southern Appalachian foreland thrust belt (Alabama) and the Eastern Gulf Coastal Plain, U.S.
