GGP Seminar: Joe Gillman, RG, MSU alumnus and State Geologist

Joe Gillman, RG, is the director and state geologist of the Missouri Geological Survey within the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. He has over 25 years of experience managing geologic investigations in the areas of economic geology, natural resource stewardship, environmental geology, waste disposal and geologic hazards. As state geologist, Gillman works to develop policy and strategy that benefits Missouri's interests at the state and federal level related to geologic and water resource issues.

His presentation will focus on critical minerals essential for current and emerging technology in energy, communications, and national defense. Right now, the U.S. is 100% dependent on imports for 21 critical mineral commodities and at least 50% dependent on imports of another 28. Undiscovered deposits of at least some of these critical minerals almost certainly exist in the United States. However, mineral exploration is hampered by the lack of modern geological, geophysical, and topographic data. Current geologic mapping, geophysical data collection, and geochemistry efforts in Missouri are aimed at identifying areas with potential for undiscovered critical mineral deposits and advance our understanding of other economically valuable mineral resources.

Gillman is a member and former president of the Association of American State Geologists and recently served as the Central States' Representative on the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program and the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program. He serves on five state boards and commissions including, the State Oil and Gas Council, the Missouri Mining Commission, the Missouri Board of Geologists Registration, the Well Installation Board and the Industrial Minerals Advisory Council. In addition, he represents Missouri's interests with the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, the Central United States Earthquake Consortium, and the Plains Carbon Dioxide Reduction Partnership.

Nationally, he serves as chair of the finance committee of the Association of State Boards of Geology and is an active member of the American Institute of Professional Geologists, the Association of Environmental and Engineering Geologists, and the National Groundwater Association. In 2018, Gillman was elected as fellow of the Geological Society of America.
