Description

Investigations into the crystal structure of Re-Ru-Si compounds

Semiconducting silicides are of particular interest as potential thermoelectric materials. Here we have combined two known semi conducting silicides, ruthenium silicide (Ru2Si3) and rhenium silicide (ReSi1.75) as the ternary compound Re1-xRuxSi1.75-0.25x in varying ratios of Ru:Re.

They were then analyzed by powder x-ray diffraction, then by single-crystal diffraction. Powder x-ray diffraction revealed probable lattice parameters and atomic placement within the unit cells with the ruthenium silicide structure as the dominant phase. Samples displaying the best crystalline structures were then analyzed by single-crystal diffraction to determine their actual crystalline structure as incommensurate Nowotny chimney-ladder structures.
