Sociolinguistic Perspectives on Domestic Slave Migrations and Ensuing Language and Dialect Contact in the Southeast
Beginning with the dialect writing of Missouri-bred author Kate Chopin, this presentation will examine the 19th century shift from French to English in the Mississippi Valley, with special emphasis on the role of the underclass due to domestic slave migrations. It will conclude with examination of dialect contact between varieties of English (including English-based Gullah) among African Americans in various locations in the Gulf South due to the same migratory dynamic.
