GGP Seminar: Larry "Boot" Pierce, RG - Earthquake Science and the Impact of a Major Earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone

Please attend a talk presented by MS '92, MSU alumnus, Larry "Boot" Pierce. Boot is a geologist with the Missouri Geological Survey. He received his bachelor's degree from Southwest Missouri State University. Upon graduation from MSU, he began with the Survey's environmental geology section working on groundwater hydrology and geologic hazards assessment issues. In 2012, he became the chief of the Geologic Resource Section where he oversees geologic mapping, industrial and metallic mineral resource assessment, historic data preservation and geologic hazards assessment. For the last 15 years, Boot has worked to develop research and outreach related to earthquakes in the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ). In addition to the Missouri Geological Survey, he is a geology instructor for East Central College in Union, Missouri, and owns Rainwater Fly Fishing School and Guide Service.

The talk on Earthquake Science and the Impact of a Major Earthquake, will discuss the geologic factors which created the NMSZ and highlight the history of earthquakes within the zone. It will discuss both the direct and indirect impact of a major earthquake in the zone and conclude with a discussion on the future of earthquake science.
