In her book, Smith discusses the gendered and raced dynamics that save some politicians and condemn others. More than just a story of sex, this is a story of ideas about American citizenship.

Smith is associate professor of religious studies and director of the Women's and Gender Studies Program at Avila University, Kansas City, Missouri. Her research specialities include U.S. evangelicals and sex, gender, and reproduction policy, as well as rhetorical and feminist perspectives.
