Film Screening and Discussion: "ICAROS: A Vision"
Date and time
6:30 PM - 9:00 PM, February 20, 2019
Description

Everyone is invited to view a film screening of "ICAROS: A Vision," directed by Leonor Caraballo and Matteo Norzi. Norzi will be at the screening to discuss the film and answer questions.

The film explores the meeting of cultures: the modern West and the indigenous Shipibo culture in the Peruvian Amazon. Angelina, an American woman with a fatal disease, travels to the Amazon in search of a miracle.  There she meets Arturo, a young indigenous shaman who is losing his eyesight. In their hallucinogenic journeys together, ignited by the psychedelic ayahuasca plant, Angelina confronts her "susto," the fear of disease; Arturo realizes that he is able to see in the dark and sing his ceremonial healing songs, the icaros.

Introductions will be provided by MSU faculty Dr. Marnie Watson (Anthropology) and Dr. Vadim Putzu (Religious Studies).

This event is sponsored by MSU Religious Studies, Political Science, Modern and Classical Languages, International Services, Anthropology and Sociology and the College of Humanities and Public Affairs.
