How can people with diverse and often irreconcilable beliefs about ultimate truth and about what it means to live well peacefully coexist in the same political community? How much unity and consensus is required? Should our expectations about common values and commitments be kept to a minimum, or does our shared political life require thick commonalities? To what extent, if any, should dissenters from majoritarian norms be exempt from the operation of broad, generally applicable laws?
